As the sun dawns on another day, all is still quiet in the house. The Folks are resting while the birds have started to sing. Pearl opens her eyes and looks towards the heavens to thank GOD for another day of life. Today is Monday July 3^rd. The first day of her long awaited vacation. She gets up and goes into the bathroom for her morning routine. She brushes her silky hair away from her face. As she looks in the mirror she reflects on the life she and her husband John are barely managing [at times] for their 4 children. Add in the news she and her sister Brenda recently got from their mother in Houston and her eyes well-up with tears.

“What’s the matter ma?” a voice from behind her ask.

She turns to see her daughter standing in the bathroom doorway with a look of concern on her face.

“Oh Nothing baby just nerves. Mama’s fine,” She says, with that smile Big John always says could light up a room.
Although she is not truly fine emotionally. She had learned just 3 days ago her mother in Texas was diagnosed with Breast cancer and must start treatments very soon. The family talked with Big John over the phone and decided someone has to be there with her. Pearl knew it would be impossible for her to go to Houston to stay because of her job at the hospital, her home and also her children. The decision was made that Ebony would go stay until the treatments were over. Grandma Eloise insisted it be a female and Ebony is her oldest granddaughter. This is one of the toughest decisions of Pearl’s seasoned life. She is finding it hard to digest. Ebony has been told of the trip. She doesn’t want to leave her friends and family but her Big Mama really needs her there.

“Is Big Mama doin’ worse?” Ebony ask.
“No baby,” Pearl says softly, “She is still the same. I’m just worried about having to send my baby girl away from home.”
Ebony is the third of Pearl and John’s four children and their only girl. She’s thirteen. Five years older than the baby boy Jesse who is eight. Their oldest Jb [John Jr] is 15 and will be starting his junior year at MLK high school in the fall. The second child, Tank [Jeremy] is 14 and only eleven months older than Ebony. With the two of them being born in 1975 [Tank, Jan.25 and Ebony Dec. 25] they would tell others [who didn’t know any better] they were twins since they would be the same age for one whole month each year. Tank and Eb are very close. So of course if Ebony has to go to Houston, Tank is planning to roll too.
“Go and get your brothers up baby,” Pearl says to Eb. “I’ll be finished in here in a minute.”
“Yes ma’am,” Ebony says.
“I’m already up,” Tank says, as he stammers into the bathroom rubbing his eyes and stretching.
“Boy! Don’t you know better than to walk into a bathroom with ladies in it?!?” Pearl yells.
“Oops. Sorry ma,” he says, looking down now as he backs out of the bathroom still half asleep.

“You want me to go get Jb and lil’ man up for you?” He ask.

“Yes please,” Pearl answers him with a smile.
“Okay,” Tank says.
He goes back towards his room.
“Oh Mama!” He yells from the hallway.
“Yes dear. What is it?”
“Ajay and June spent the night!”
“Okay sweetheart. Get them up too and y'all get ready for breakfast,” She says, as she dries her hands.
“Baby girl the bathroom is all yours and don’t camp out in here okay? Hurry so you can help me in the kitchen.”

Ebony says okay, smiles and closes the door when her mom leaves. Big June and Anthony were usually staying over or Jb and Tank were staying with them. But last night was different. Anthony or Ajay as he is called had stayed the night alright but this time he had slept in Ebony‘s Room. He’d gotten up and gone back to the boys room just about an hour ago. It wasn’t unusual for him to come into her room. They would talk and things. She liked the way he kissed her. He would touch her face so gently with one hand while his other hand explored her developing breast and body. He would end up caressing her most private spot. He’d gently place one finger inside her, roll his tongue around in her mouth and over her breast and nipples. It was he who was responsible, she thought, for her breasts’ growing. This is what he always said. Ebony didn’t care for his fingers inside of her. He would try it often but he would remove it as soon as he felt her squirms of discomfort. Ebony is a very intelligent girl but very naive when it comes to sex. Until just a few hours ago, she’d been a virgin. With only invited touch from Ajay for the last 3 years. After learning she was leaving in 3 days she wanted to feel the real thing he was always talking to her about. Though he never pressured her for sex, she always knew one day she would go all the way. In her heart she knew Ajay was the only man for this honor. He’d never tried to go all the way with her before because though he is deep in the streets and known throughout the hood for his heartless ways he always had a certain respect and compassion for Ebony. They all grew up together. He and Ebony use to fight and argue all the time when they were smaller and she would always say she “can’t stand him”. Their parents figured eventually that would change and they would start to get along. The families have been very close for 2 generations and they knew this generation would be no different. Ebony is now struggling with how will she tell her mom. She’s afraid her mother will be disappointed in her. Before last night ever happened, she’d wanted to tell Pearl she’d let him kiss her and touch her but could never find the courage to do so. She knew her mother would say she was too young for this sort of behavior. Ebony will have to find a way to tell her before she leaves for Houston. She has to tell her face to face. She has only 3 days in which to do so.
